Safe Internet Alliance Honors “Safer Internet Day” to Promote Internet Safety Awareness

WASHINGTON – The Safe Internet Alliance today observed Safer Internet Day, an internationally recognized event which promotes Internet safety and awareness.  The Alliance urged parents and teachers to take time today to sit down with children and explain Internet threats, responsibilities, and the safety precautions that should be taken when navigating the Internet.

“On a day dedicated to Internet safety, it’s timely for parents and teachers to discuss Internet safety and security and online ethics to increase children’s understanding and awareness of potential risks as well as the responsibilities they have to themselves and others online.   Children are aware of the many exciting and empowering applications of the Internet,” said Linda Criddle, president of Safe Internet Alliance. “But what children lack is an understanding of every Internet user’s social responsibility to act appropriately, and the skills they need to safely maintain their privacy.” Criddle continued.

“We hope today’s internationally recognized event, Safer Internet Day, will remind parents and teachers to spend time teaching children to protect themselves online in a positive, uplifting manner.  We also hope that, as the FCC continues to develop the National Broadband Plan, it considers these concerns as they pertain to online safety, homeland security, and cybersecurity purposes,” concluded Criddle.

Today is the 7th annual celebration of Safer Internet Day, which was initiated by the European Commission and is recognized worldwide.
