Safe Internet Alliance Represented at the 2010 Computers Freedom and Privacy Conference
Safe Internet Alliance president Linda Criddle spoke at the 2010 Computers Freedom and Privacy Conference last week. Held in San Jose, the conferences focus this year was on how freedom and privacy are evolving in a networked society. Criddle represented the Alliance on the panel covering Safety vs. Liberty: The Rights of Minors in the Digital Age where she discussed the strong need for innovation in safety technologies to match the dynamic needs of families in modern online tools, the need to design products with safety in mind from the outset. She recommended focusing attention on three areas in order to increase the safety and rights of consumers of all ages:
1. Increasing education that including skills training as well as awareness training, that encourages the responsible use of technologies, and that integrates technologies into the learning environment.
2. Innovation in engineering to add safety functionality, design core products with safety from the outset, and build test cases to identify and mitigate potential risks to consumers.
3. Increased enforcement of positive online behaviors by helping families and schools understand how they can teach and enforce responsible online behavior, by holding companies accountable to enforce their terms of use, and by facilitating information sharing with law enforcement when online incidents warrant legal action.
