Reading, writing, counting… what about the Internet? By SaferDates

In school we are taught how to read, how to write, and how to count. We start teaching our children not to talk to strangers as soon as they can understand, but what about how to use the Internet?  After all, aren’t they still talking to strangers?

For example, we recently read an article about a 13-year-old girl who met an older man on MySpace. They started talking and eventually he picked her up and took her to his house where he sexually assaulted her.  Educating children on how predators use the Internet and how to safely navigate online may have stopped this incident from occurring.

In our opinion, in today’s world, Internet awareness is so much more important than home economics. We think it should be taught in our schools along with the basics.
