A recent study done in collaboration between the Associated Press and MTV found alarmingly high levels of online and mobile abuse, sometimes referred to as cyber bullying. About half of all adolescents and young adults have experienced at least some form of cyber bullying, while as much as high as 30% had received or sent nude photos. About 10% of people that age have actually sent nude photos, the majority of which were girls:

Females are slightly more likely to share a naked photo of themselves (13%) than males (9%) while youth who are sexually active are more than twice as likely to send such photos (17% vs. 8%). Perhaps more disturbing is the finding that 17% report having passed the image to someone else and just over 9% have distributed the images to more than one person. Twenty-nine percent of respondents who shared a naked photo of themselves report that they shared the image with someone who they never met in person and only knew online. That represents about 3% of the total sample.

Many times when a person sends a nude photo it's under the misconception that it will only be shared with one person, but that's often not the case.

But in addition to online abuse and sexting, teens are also using their cell phones for other bullying means, most notably bully texts. These actions have led in some cases to offline altercations, including a 12-year-old boy at his middle school who was beaten after a "Facebook entry urging young people to 'Kick a Ginger,' or attack redheads."

Readwriteweb recently offered up "5 Easy Steps to Stay Safe (and Private!) on Facebook," encouraging users to create specialized friends lists and then manually controlling what information each of those friends lists can access.

"However, if you choose not to take any precautions, then you'll only have yourself to blame when an errant wall post or naughty photo makes its way online and straight into Grandma's News Feed, or worse, your boss's," the article states. "These days, it's better be safe than sorry, so go ahead and delve into those settings!"

But of course as we learned at the Framework for a Safe Internet conference, these websites do not have the resources to monitor their millions of users all of the time, putting at least some of the responsibility on parents and schools to tackle this problem head-on. Until a teen understands the consequences of sending an inappropriate photo, it can be very difficult to change his or her behavior.
