Mission, Goals & Principles

The Mission

Establish a safe and open Internet as the cornerstone upon which consumers, companies, and countries build the digital future in two ways:

  • Working with policymakers on Capitol Hill and with the Administration to examine and develop policies that promote a safe and open Internet by promoting online safety education in schools and in conjunction with the rollout of the broadband plan, creating an environment that fosters technology innovation in Internet products, services and platforms, and promoting core principles for a market solution-based consumers Internet safety Bill of Rights.
  • Engaging directly with software designers, online services and hardware manufacturers to strengthen the protection of consumers in a “Safer by Design” approach that creates a repository of best practices, guidelines and resources (open source, software, sample code, software design and development processes, etc) that will be maintained and enhanced by major industry players and accessible to all industry players to help raise the bar of safety in software design.

The Motto

Know the facts, understand the issues, shape the future.

2010 Strategic Objectives

2009 saw the successful launch and branding of the Safe Internet Alliance. In 2010 the Alliance will establish a common data repository for internet safety feature code and best content, drive consensus on best practices for respecting consumer safety and informing consumers of potential risks and tradeoffs, publish new online safety research, and establish working groups to further our mission.

    Safe Internet’s established goals:

  • Elevate Internet safety, security and privacy as critical business and legislative priorities
  • Foster support for a Safe And Open Internet through engagement in policy debates on Capitol Hill, with the Administration and with respected third party groups
  • Emphasize empowering users with choices to better protect themselves from cybercrime and abuse by providing the best tools for Internet safety, security and privacy through technical design and consumer education
  • Advance an Internet ethic of respect for, and accountability to, others

In keeping with these objectives, we will:

  • Meet with and educate key stakeholders within the industry, as well as national regulators and members of Congress to lay a foundation for protecting consumers safety and privacy within products and services.
  • Raise awareness of the necessity of increased safety measures in network, data and content management, and begin laying the platform for a robust central database to house and share best practice code and content.
  • Build support and momentum for federal policies and processes that advance a safe and open Internet, and analyze proposed regulation or legislation from a consumer safety viewpoint, policies that would impact the safety, security and privacy of Internet users and communicate that impact to the appropriate policymakers.
